In Part 1, we looked at what Onboarding is, and why it is so crucial to get right.
Now we’ll look at what you need to consider when Onboarding new staff into your business.
Onboarding starts with the Orientation. This is the time for the new employee to complete and return all of the Payroll (ie bank information and tax forms) and HR forms (ie emergency contacts and personal information). It should also give them the opportunity to ask any questions they may have.
An important part of this process is how you make the employee feel. It’s important that they feel welcomed – in particular that they are greeted warmly on their first day. They should also get a personal introduction to people that they will be working closely with, and those who hold senior positions within the company (where possible).
The complete Onboarding process can take 1 -2 years, and also includes the standard employee review process that all staff are part of. When they start, communicate the full process with the new employee, and be clear with what’s expected of them at each point.
After going through how the process will work, you’ll need to monitor the progress of the new employee over time, and encourage open two-way communication.
Once established, you will be able to follow the same procedure for each new employee.
