When hiring employees, there are different types of employment options you can offer them, depending on what your requirements are.
By understanding the different types, it will help you make the decision on what’s best for the role (or roles) you are hiring for:
- Permanent Full-time: This is a full time (typically 37.5 hours) role, on a permanent basis. You would usually offer a 3 or 6 month probation with this type of role, during which time either the employer or employee can terminate the agreement.
- Permanent Part-time: This option is very similar to the above, but will be fewer hours. When the role is offered it will be made clear to the employee how many hours they are to work each week. This may be subject to change and negotiation between the employer and employee.
- Casual: A casual employee will usually have hours that change depending on the business needs. For example, during busy times they may work more hours, then it will be less during quiet times. These employees will have their roster given to them ahead of time so they can plan ahead. With this type of agreement, either party may terminate at any time.
- Contract: This is the type of agreement that is typically made when you are hiring someone to help with a specific project, or for a specific reason (i.e. setting up a new system). When you are hiring, you will set the time frame, so candidates have a clear understanding on what’s expected of them and by when.
As you can see, it’s important to take into consideration what your business needs, then make the decision on what’s best. Depending on what option you decide on, you may be able to change it later (ie casual to permanent employee), so also keep this in mind when deciding.
